CRIME NEWS

  • Dustin Shearer was arrested on April 8 for the fentanyl-related death of Steven Taylor, who was found dead on August 25, 2024, in a Benton County home with drug paraphernalia and fentanyl present — he is set to appear in court on May 24 and faces an identity theft charge in Franklin County.  NBC Tri-Cities

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students from Kamiakin High School’s choir, band, and drama programs performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City over spring break—an 18-month project that gave them a chance to experience one of the world’s most famous music venues and mark a milestone in arts education.  NBC Tri-Cities

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A U.S. Department of Energy report released April 15 shows that cleaning up Hanford has already cost about $65 billion and will cost between $364 billion and $589.4 billion while extending cleanup until fiscal 2086 with long-term stewardship through 2100; lower range costs increased by $72 billion and active cleanup will take eight years longer than previous estimates. The DOE is accepting public input until June 16 for the next report in 2028.  Tri-Cities Business News
  • Today the U.S. Department of Energy released the 2025 Hanford Lifecycle Scope, Schedule, and Cost Report—detailing a cleanup plan for the Hanford Site that will treat underground tank waste on the Central Plateau, reduce risks, and extend work through 2086 with long-term care until 2100. The report, submitted to the EPA and Washington State Department of Ecology, estimates cleanup costs between $364 billion and $589.4 billion.  NBC Tri-Cities
  • Washington State University Tri-Cities will host a panel on small modular reactors on April 22 from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. in Room 120 at the Consolidated Information Center, where experts from WSU Pullman, Energy Northwest and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory will discuss challenges and opportunities—with an online viewing option available that invites community members and policymakers to join.  NBC Tri-Cities

  • Kennewick, Richland, Pasco, and West Richland police have partnered with ARC of the Tri-Cities to launch Project Guardian— a voluntary program that gathers crucial contact and identification information for loved ones with special needs— to help officers prepare better during emergencies.  The KEY
  • Gov. Bob Ferguson signed House Bill 1457 on Friday—this bipartisan law requires 24/7 electronic monitoring of sexually violent predators before their conditional release—to improve community safety, with courts now mandated to set tracking boundaries and timely alerts.  KONA
