COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Tri-Cities resident Jeff Shaw will start a 363-mile bike ride from Richland to Springfield on May 1 to raise funds for Clean Sweep Tri-Cities—an organization that supports those battling addiction—sponsored by Garrett Electric and Olsson Industrial Electric. He has trained non-stop since December for the 24-hour ride and plans to complete it without sleep.  KEPR TV

CRIME NEWS

  • A man was arrested near Finley for reckless minibike riding after he reportedly tried to avoid a traffic stop and crashed on the Cable Bridge.  NBC Tri-Cities
  • Officers in Kennewick responded to a fight at The Pub on West Clearwater Avenue on Friday and tracked a hit-and-run after a dark Subaru sped away at 11:17 p.m., crashing into a city sign at a roundabout on West Fourth Avenue and Kellogg Street and leading to the arrest of a man and a woman who were taken to Benton County Jail.  NBC Tri-Cities

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Benton County Mosquito Control held its 20th annual tire recycling event for Earth Day — a program that lets residents safely discard unused tires to help reduce mosquito breeding and clean up the area. After collection, the tires will be sent to Liberty Tire in Spokane for recycling.  NBC Tri-Cities
  • Tri-Cities Airport launched an innovative pilot program on April 19th to treat deicing wastewater using worms to aerate and convert nutrients — partnering with BioFiltro to test a more sustainable onsite system. Officials said the 180-day trial will help decide if this energy-efficient treatment method can replace reliance on the Pasco Wastewater Treatment Facility as airline activity increases.  FOX 41 Yakima

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Representative Stephanie Barnard’s bill to cut duplicate licensure surveys for accredited birthing centers was signed by the governor and passed unanimously. The law will start 90 days after the session ends on April 27—waiving extra surveys for centers that meet national standards while the Department of Health keeps checking non‐accredited sites.  NBC Tri-Cities
  • Tri-Cities dispatchers were honored during National Public Safety Telecommunications Week when their vital role in answering 9-1-1 calls was recognized at SECOMM on April 19th. SECOMM — the local dispatch center — is hiring at least 10 new dispatchers who must be 18 or older and type 35 words per minute.  KEPR TV
