  • The Washington State Patrol said witnesses saw an older red SUV with rear-end damage leave the scene of a two-vehicle crash on State Route 240 in Kennewick on May 7—officers urged anyone with information to contact Detective Ryan Sauve.  FOX 41 Yakima

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Community First Bank branches will close on May 9 and reopen on May 13 as they merge with Spokane Teacher's Credit Union — the merger adds ten branches and follows over three months of planning.  The KEY

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Federal Reserve kept its target rate unchanged between 4.25 and 4.5 percent while the average 30-year mortgage rate rose to 6.93 percent in the week ending May 7—lenders advise home buyers to lock in rates amid economic uncertainty over higher tariffs.  FOX 41 Yakima

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The American flag was removed from the Blue Bridge because its mounting hardware failed—replacement parts have been ordered and crews plan to reinstall the flag within a few weeks. WSDOT noted that similar delays have happened before during routine flag replacements.  The KEY
  • Marissa Adamson—West Richland’s animal and code compliance officer—launched a spay and neuter program today to reduce the feral cat population.  NBC Tri-Cities

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new study published in Human Reproduction found that girls who ate more inflammatory foods were 15% more likely to start their periods early while a healthier diet lowered the odds by 8% even after body size was considered—research on over 7,500 children shows that food choices may have long-term effects on health risks later in life.  FOX 41 Yakima
  • A new study showed that teenagers with high blood sugar had up to three times the risk of developing heart damage by young adulthood—researchers tracked nearly 1,600 youths and found that girls' hearts were harmed five times faster than boys'. The report urges early blood sugar control to prevent future heart problems.  FOX 41 Yakima
