  • Girls on the Run Southeast WA taught life skills through exercise on May 16 by using group workouts that build confidence and promote healthy habits.  NBC Tri-Cities

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Ferguson visited the Tri-Cities on Thursday to sign 11 bills, including a student privacy measure that has raised concerns about parental rights—critics say the law may keep parents from being involved in important school decisions. He faces a May 20 deadline to sign the state operating budget while other controversial bills on health care costs and unemployment benefits remain unscheduled for his signature.  The KEY
  • The Bureau of Land Management has imposed fire restrictions on more than 16.1 million acres of public lands in Washington and Oregon starting May 15, banning fireworks, exploding targets and certain ammunition to reduce human-caused fires. Anyone who violates these restrictions may face fines up to $100,000 and up to 12 months in jail — and could also be billed for fire suppression costs.  KEPR TV
  • Tri-Cities Airport in Pasco received a $7 million FAA grant to expand its terminal—officials say the funding will triple the baggage makeup area and support planned improvements to handle record passenger traffic. The grant is part of a broader federal investment of over $66 million in Washington airport projects.  The KEY

HEALTH NEWS

  • A May 16 study showed that low-income Medicare beneficiaries who lost the Medicare Part D Low-Income Subsidy were 4% more likely to die and faced a 22% higher risk if they relied on high-cost medicines+ researchers analyzed nearly 1 million cases and found that over half of those who lost Medicaid later regained it. The findings highlight the need for stable dual coverage to maintain access to essential medications.  FOX 41 Yakima
