- ➤ Kennewick Police arrested a man late Saturday night at Columbia Park East Boat Launch after he allegedly set his car on fire using gasoline and a lighter on a second-degree arson charge. NBC Tri-Cities
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife banned feeding deer, elk, and moose on May 17 to protect them from chronic wasting disease—using bird feeders that attract these animals is also now illegal. NBC Tri-Cities
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ State Labor & Industries fined Pacific Agri Services LLC $1.25 million for allegedly failing to give nearly 5,000 workers clear details on job locations, housing, and transportation when it did not provide records for a scheduled review— the fine, the largest ever given to a farm labor contractor, covers other violations like operating without a license and missing records, and the company is now appealing the decision. - ➤ Richland city council has proposed a resolution to remove Bateman Island’s riparian habitat from its lease with the US Army Corps of Engineers—letting the Army resume management to support a Yakima River Delta restoration for salmon and endangered species—and will discuss the plan on Tuesday, May 20. - ➤ Richland will update Thayer Drive by replacing old streetlights over a 1.5-mile stretch as the BPA removes its poles and wires in fall (this change also lets the city expand its fiber network). At a council meeting on May 20, officials will approve a contract with Allstar Construction Group for $1,148,529.16 to install 43 new lights (the project will include relocating street signs). - ➤ Tri-Cities Airport has secured $7 million in federal funds (from the FAA) to pay for part of its terminal expansion that started recently; the grant was helped by U.S. Senators Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray to support future travel demand and local jobs. Tri-Cities Business News
