ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On June 1, two crashes on US 395 north of Connell resulted in one death and five injuries — a car hit a slowing truck and a six-vehicle pileup caused by speeding led to Andrew Thomas, 29 from Spokane, dying at the scene while others were taken to the hospital.  FOX 41 Yakima
  • Ayers Fire near Meals Road is 80 percent contained after burning 450 acres — no structures were damaged and a vehicle overturned in steep terrain with its driver uninjured, officials said.  FOX 41 Yakima

CRIME NEWS

  • David Kurt Schneider of Kennewick was sentenced to 12 months in prison and must pay tens of thousands in restitution for stealing nearly $300,000 in Covid-19 relief funds for small businesses—another co-defendant from Pasco will be sentenced on July 30.  Tri-Cities Business News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Wildland firefighters monitored the Les Blair Road Fire that burned about 510 acres in southeastern Benton County on Saturday—by 6 p.m. the blaze was 10% contained and crews repaired damage to two power poles while a nearby shed sustained minor damage.  Apple Valley News Now
  • Fire officials reported the Ayers Fire burned 450 acres in southeastern Benton County and is 60% contained after firefighters responded at 7:30 p.m. near South Meals and South Ayers Roads in the Hover Park area where no structures were damaged though a power pole was affected and an off-road vehicle overturned with no injuries. Firefighters will continue to check for hotspots through Sunday — dry, windy conditions persist.  Apple Valley News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Bonneville Power Administration has released a draft environmental assessment for a plan that will install a substation rated at 500 kilovolts at Weber Canyon and build a new transmission line of 115 kilovolts that will stretch 18 miles to support power needs in the Tri-Cities. A public meeting to discuss the project will be held on June 4 from 6—8 p.m. at Cottonwood Elementary School in Kennewick.  Tri-Cities Business News
