COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Kennewick will host memorial events on September 11 at the 9/11 World Trade Center Memorial at Southridge Sports and Events Complex to honor lives lost 24 years ago. The ceremonies will run from 6:30 to 10:45 a.m.—featuring the presentation of colors, national anthem, and guard changes every half hour while displaying a unique piece of World Trade Center steel.  NBC Tri-Cities

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A thunderstorm on September 9 sent Franklin County Fire District #3 crews to nine lightning-related calls, including a 33-acre stubble field fire near Pasco Kahlotus Road and Murphy Road that was contained by 9:40 p.m.—crews also managed additional calls in Walla Walla County.  FOX 41 Yakima

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Four Powerball tickets sold in local stores won prizes up to $100,000 even though they missed the $1.79 billion jackpot in a drawing on Saturday. A ticket from the Safeway in Kennewick won $100,000 + tickets from stores in Yakima, Waitsburg and Prosser won $50,000 each.  Apple Valley News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Columbia Basin College celebrated its 70th anniversary on September 8 by renaming the Social Sciences and World Languages Building after former president Dr. Richard Cummins—acknowledging his commitment to student success. The college will also upgrade its legacy Hawk sculpture, which is scheduled to debut in fall.  FOX 41 Yakima

  • The U.S. Department of Energy says it remains focused on Hanford’s cleanup despite the resignation of top official Roger Jarrell — the Waste Treatment Plant is in its final testing phase and is set for hot commissioning next month.  KEPR TV
  • The U.S. Department of Energy has selected a number of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory projects in Richland to get part of $35 million in federal funding along with more than $21 million from partners. These projects will help bring new technology—like an updated research portal, a process for better copper, and a device to track fish—into use.  Tri-Cities Business News
