  • Richland Friends of the Library will host its Fall Book Sale starting on October 15th with a Friends-Only Preview Sale from 5–7 p.m.—non-members can join at the door for a yearly fee and shop additional hours on Thursday and Saturday, with a $5 Bag Day sale, as all proceeds fund library programs.  The KEY
  • Today, the 5th Annual Trot for Trot Race is held at Columbia Point Marina in Richland to support Therapeutic Riding of Tri-Cities with a 5K run and a 1-mile fun run for all ages. Cynthia MacFarlan said special awards—given to top finishers—will be offered as participants register online or at the event on Saturday morning.  Apple Valley News Now

  • Officials at the WA State Medical Commission report that scammers are targeting medical providers by using forged letterhead and false claims of inspections—these fraudsters call providers to pressure them into sharing sensitive data.  The KEY

  • World-renowned metalsmith Graham had his work showcased at Richland’s Gallery at the Park earlier this month + art lovers from around the world attended the reception to view pieces featured in the Smithsonian’s permanent exhibit.  NBC Tri-Cities
  • The Washington State Library offers extensive genealogy records to help Kennewick residents explore their family history and learn about their Washington legacy. Resources include books, city directories and maps (organized by the library) that aid in tracing local roots.  KONA

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Skywatchers will see the Orionid meteor shower peak on Oct. 21 with the best views expected between midnight and 2 a.m. in a dark, moonless sky. The annual display is caused by debris from Halley's Comet burning in Earth's atmosphere + offering a bright celestial show.  KONA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local services shift gears on Monday as federal offices, post offices, banks, schools, libraries and municipal offices close for the holiday while grocery stores, retail outlets and transit remain open. Residents in Tri-Cities should plan ahead + note that many state offices will operate normally because Washington does not observe Columbus Day.  KONA

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Mariners beat the Tigers 3-2 in a 15-inning MLB playoff game on October 10 — Jorge Polanco’s walk-off single ended the longest winner-take-all matchup in postseason history. The victory advanced Seattle into the American League Championship Series as they will face the Toronto Blue Jays.  FOX 41 Yakima
