ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Emergency responders are searching the Columbia River for a kayaker who went missing after calling 911 on October 14—teams found a capsized kayak near the confluence of the Snake and Columbia Rivers and still remain on scene.  Apple Valley News Now
  • With summer fading into fall and darker evenings arriving earlier, Kennewick authorities are urging pedestrians and drivers to be extra careful in low light conditions—Trooper Daniel Mosqueda advises joggers to wear reflectors and keep music low while urging drivers to avoid distractions. He noted that 25% of collisions in past investigations involved distracted driving and recommended that witnesses safely note vehicle details if an accident occurs.  Apple Valley News Now

  • An interactive map lets Tri-Cities residents view 43 decorated Halloween homes with more added daily. The map also shows Christmas lights (a bonus for holiday lovers) for those who enjoy festive displays.  KONA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • This Thursday the sirens will sound near the Hanford Nuclear Reservation as part of scheduled testing by DOE, Energy Northwest, and local emergency services to verify the alert system's functionality and train workers on emergency procedures — the Emergency Alert System will activate at 10:16 a.m. and continue testing until noon.  NewsTalk 870

HEALTH NEWS

  • Kadlec Tri-Cities Cancer Center Nursing Academy received a $10K Local Heroes Grant from Gesa Community Foundation to help train 25 nurses in a 12-week oncology residency that combines hands-on learning with classroom instruction using national standards.  KEPR TV
  • Spot It Early, a health start-up, is testing beagles trained to sniff out breast, colorectal, prostate and lung cancers in clinical trials—each dog is paired with artificial intelligence to boost detection accuracy. The test will be available next year and will return results within days to guide follow-up care.  FOX 41 Yakima
  • Kadlec's Breast Cancer Program earned national accreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, proving that patients get care from a group of different doctors using advanced 3D mammograms and screening MRI—helping them get top care close to home. Only about half of eligible women get yearly mammograms, showing that early detection can cut the risk of death by 60%.  Apple Valley News Now
  • A study presented on Oct. 12 showed that 79% of children fasted from clear liquids much longer than the recommended two hours before surgery—raising risks of dehydration, anxiety, and poor recovery. Researchers reviewed nearly 72,000 cases and found that while fasting times for older children dropped slightly from 11 to 9 hours over the years, infants continued to fast for about 6.5 hours.  FOX 41 Yakima

  • A West Richland homeowner cut her asking price by $37,000 on her mother's home to help buyers cover eviction costs for family members still living there—she has spent over $70,000 in legal fees so far.
