- ➤ Second Harvest, a nonprofit that sources and distributes about 35 million pounds of food yearly to local banks and meal programs, said on June 23 it is partnering with Yoke's Fresh Market for the 'What's for Lunch' food drive in June to help families when school meals are not available—while also running a mobile market program to bring food directly to communities. - ➤ Five Below will soon open a discount store in Richland in the old Party City building next to the Grocery Outlet in the Queensgate area—shoppers are excited for another affordable option in the growing retail scene. - ➤ Kennewick police are investigating an incident on June 20 when officers found a person with severe but non-life-threatening facial injuries on First Avenue—evidence from a wrecked vehicle suggests a gun was fired, and the suspect left before authorities arrived. Apple Valley News Now
- ➤ Early Saturday morning at 3:11 a.m., Kennewick Police responded to an alarm at Foodie's Restaurant on Paul Parish Drive in Columbia Park and found Fredy Basurto-Basurto drinking liquor while claiming the restaurant was his home — he now faces multiple charges. KONA
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Scientists from the Centre for Whale Research observed endangered southern resident killer whales in the Salish Sea using bull kelp for grooming on June 23. The study, published in Current Biology, found that the whales fashioned tools from kelp and groomed mostly with close relatives (with fewer than 80 individuals in the group) and plan to examine the behavior further. - ➤ Washington state will enact nine new laws on July 1 that will raise the gas tax by 6¢ per gallon, increase tunnel tolls, and adjust estate, employment, and labor protections. - ➤ Health leaders at Benton-Franklin Health District are advising residents about potential toxins in the rivers and have started a water testing program today until early November — testing water from 12 locations twice a month — to help keep dogs safe. KEPR TV
- ➤ A review published on June 17 in Heart found that weed use doubled the risk of death from heart disease and raised stroke and heart attack risks — the study pooled data from 24 previous studies of nearly 200 million people, and researchers urged better warnings and education as daily cannabis use rises.
