Good morning, Kennewick. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 7th of July.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Community members at Kennewick City Hall on July 1 urged the council to build a new aquatic center because the single Kenneth Serier Memorial Pool is too limited for 83,000 residents. A local parent, swim instructor, and former coach argued that a larger facility would better support families and competitive events — a proposal that contrasts with plans in nearby Pasco.  NBC Tri-Cities
  • Crews are working to restore power after an outage left 106 customers without electricity in West Kennewick (repairs began this morning).  NBC Tri-Cities

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A public hearing on the potential transfer of Ziply Fiber Northwest to Bell Canada's BCE Holding Company is set for 6 p.m. July 16 via Zoom and phone—public comments can be submitted online, by phone, or by mail. The companies say the $3.65 billion deal aims to boost fiber internet in rural Washington and expand Bell Canada's network to over 12 million locations by the end of 2028.  Tri-Cities Business News

CRIME NEWS

  • Late Sunday at about 9:30 p.m., officers responded to a shooting in Pasco’s 1700 block of North 6th Avenue where a man was hospitalized with a gunshot wound—agencies including Kennewick, Richland and SWAT are searching for the suspects.  Apple Valley News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Richland Parks and Recreation Commission is considering a proposal to declare the South Orchard Park parcel surplus if Nor Am Investment provides a replacement parcel for the underserved Badger Mountain Subarea. The commission said the change follows abandoned school site plans and a nearby private HOA park is being built—City Council will soon review the proposal.  NBC Tri-Cities
  • West Richland is asking for public input on plans to develop the 7,600-acre Lewis and Clark Ranch owned by Frank Tiegs LLC. The first phase will develop 750 acres with new roads, sewers and water lines, and comments are due by 5 p.m. Aug. 4 or during a hybrid meeting at 6 p.m. July 10 at city council chambers — details are in the draft environmental impact statement.  Tri-Cities Business News
  • Mayor Gretel Crawford proclaimed July as Parks and Recreation Month at the city council meeting on July 1—she said parks boost property values, support local business and tourism, and help preserve the community's natural beauty. Parks and Recreation Commissioner Ken Hahn also thanked the council for its backing.  NBC Tri-Cities
  • At a City Hall meeting on July 1, residents said one old pool is too small for 83,000 people — a parent, a coach and students called for a new aquatic center — while noting that a $47 million pool facility in Pasco will open on Memorial Day.  FOX 41 Yakima
