CRIME NEWS
- ➤ On July 21, Kennewick police detained a man on suspicion of robbery and kidnapping after he allegedly stole a woman's keys and forced her into his car; the woman escaped and officers tracked his vehicle to an apartment on north Tweedt Street where nearby buildings were evacuated before the suspect was taken into custody. - ➤ Kennewick police arrested motorcyclist Herbert Girton, 41, after he sped away while driving 60 mph in a 40 zone near Steptoe Street and west Tucannon Avenue on July 15 and later was found at his apartment on July 21 (charges include first-degree driving while license is suspended, failing to obey a police officer, obstructing a public servant, and operating a vehicle without an ignition interlock device). - ➤ Pasco educator Jacqueline Brewster—a Family and Consumer Sciences teacher at New Horizons High School—was named 2025 GRADS Teacher of the Year by WA-FACSE, which honors her efforts in helping students learn real-life skills. Brewster, who won the award in 2016, will be honored at a presentation in Spokane on August 5 and will begin teaching at Sageview High School next school year. The KEY

- ➤ Benton-Franklin Health District officials warn local residents to avoid swimming in the Columbia River after reports of swimmer’s itch, an itchy rash caused by a microscopic parasite, emerged from recent recreations. They advise using waterproof sunscreen and drying off immediately (to reduce risk) after water activities. Apple Valley News Now
- ➤ The Benton-Franklin Health District warned swimmers about swimmer's itch in parts of the Columbia River after several people reported skin irritation including tingling, burning, and a red rash from a parasite that normally infects birds and mammals & causes a mild allergic reaction. Health officials advise residents to avoid affected areas, dry off quickly after swimming, and use waterproof sunscreen to lower their risk. FOX 41 Yakima

- ➤ The 60th Tri-City Water Follies will take place this weekend with hydroplane races on the Columbia River from Friday, July 25 to Sunday, July 27, with testing and races running from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday — the STCU Over-the-River Air Show runs daily from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and spectators can watch from designated viewing areas in Kennewick and Pasco.
