- ➤ A monument honoring Marine Cpl. Gerald Carmichael—the first Kennewick service member killed in the Vietnam War—will be rededicated after a community-led restoration effort. The ceremony will be at 10 a.m. Sept 13 at the Fruitland School parking lot and will include remarks from Carmichael's sisters and Mayor Pro Tem Chuck Torelli along with several veteran groups. - ➤ The Benton Franklin Humane Society in Kennewick urgently needs food and monetary donations because its shelter supplies are very low. Residents can drop off unopened dog and cat food at 1736 East 7th Ave—staff say help is needed to keep the shelter running. KONA

GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Benton County will hold a groundbreaking ceremony on September 16 at 1:00 p.m. at the Fairgrounds to mark the start of upgrades for McDaniel Arena's grandstands — the new structure will double seating from 3,000 to 6,000 and improve public facilities, while parking lot improvements costing $3 million have already been completed. - ➤ Kennewick is hosting a 9/11 memorial event today at the Southridge Sports and Events Complex where ceremonies include the presentation of the colors, the national anthem, and a changing of the guard every half hour until the colors are retired at 10:45 a.m.—City officials and community partners organized the tribute to honor lives lost on 9/11, 2001, featuring a piece of steel from the World Trade Center.
