  • Local volunteers refurbished the Gerald Carmichael U.S. Marine Memorial at the intersection of Vineyard Drive, Garfield Street and Carmichael Drive to honor the Vietnam veteran killed in 1966. A dedication ceremony will be held today in the Fruitland School parking lot at 10 a.m. with remarks by his sisters and Mayor Pro Tem Chuck Torelli.  Apple Valley News Now
  • Ricky is a resilient black kitten at Tri-Cities Animal Services in Pasco who arrived on August 19 with an eye and respiratory infection but now weighs 2 pounds after receiving care. He is up-to-date on vaccines+ neutered, microchipped and cleared by the on-site vet, and he is ready for adoption with a fee of $50.  NewsTalk 870

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Kennewick firefighters responded on September 11 at 2:21 p.m. to a travel trailer fire on west Bonnie Avenue where bystanders used fire extinguishers (labeled ABC) to control the blaze before it spread, and crews later put out hot spots while one occupant was treated for minor injuries and the damaged trailer is being evaluated for safety.  Apple Valley News Now

  • Fiery Foods Festival 2025 starts today from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Pasco's Peanut Park—bringing local restaurants with spicy dishes, a new eating competition with Wingstop, a kids' zone, live music, and over 50 regional vendors.  NBC Tri-Cities

  • United Way of Benton and Franklin Counties is promoting school attendance during Attendance Awareness Month by using its Attendance Matters program—mentors in six local schools help students overcome barriers and connect families with resources throughout September.  Apple Valley News Now
  • Richland School District is keeping students safe this school year by holding monthly drills on emergency procedures — including hallway incidents, severe weather, fires, and security threats. The district uses ParentSquare to alert families and asks that parents not call or pick up students until given the all-clear.  Apple Valley News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sen. Murray said a DOE official reported that a safety issue is delaying the final testing stage at Hanford’s Waste Treatment Plant, which is set to begin operations on October 15—DOE officials say plans remain unchanged.  Tri-Cities Business News
  • Political leaders support the Hanford nuclear waste project after DOE officials allegedly raised safety concerns. WA Ecology and Governor Ferguson said the Waste Treatment Plant will begin hot commissioning by October 15—federal court orders mandate the next phase as testing continues during its cold commissioning period.  KEPR TV
  • Benton County Fire District 4 re-opened Station 410 at 1400 Harrington Road after nearly five years of closure for renovations that allowed it to house a water tender, fire engine, and ambulance. Since staffing resumed on June 14, average response times dropped from 7.23 to 5.04 minutes + reducing the load on other stations.  KONA

  • The American Red Cross has opened a new blood and platelet donation center in Kennewick today at 7202 West Deschutes Avenue, replacing the longtime Richland site after more than two decades of service in the Tri-Cities. The modern facility consolidates blood collection, first aid training and disaster response under one roof — it aims to attract younger and diverse donors — to better meet community needs.  Apple Valley News Now
  • Gooder Foods Inc. is recalling five lots of Vegan Is Believin’ white Cheddar with Spirals and three lots of Here Comes Truffle Creamy Truffle Flavored Cheddar and Shells because they may contain undeclared milk or cashews+the recalled lots produced April 7 to April 15 have been linked to eight allergic reactions.
