- ➤ This Saturday, Tri-Cities Animal Services in Pasco will host the Felines and Firefighters Adoption Event from 10am until 2pm (1311 S. 18th Avenue), where firefighters help local residents adopt cats, kittens, and other animals. - ➤ Richland’s Port of Benton reached Class 1 track status after major work replaced five road crossings and added 3,400 rail ties on its line from Kennewick to Horn Rapids Industrial Park—making the rail line work better. The port will ask for a $9.56 million federal grant with $2.4 million in matching funds to replace four miles of track, upgrade two rail crossings, and add 9,000 new ties by the end of 2027—boosting safety and train speeds. - ➤ Franklin County commissioners announced Sept. 19 that they will not renew the interlocal agreement with Benton County for human services due to excessive cost demands, so services such as help for the homeless, affordable housing, behavioral health, and veteran support will cease Sept. 30 and be run by the state or new county staff—cost pressures became unmanageable with monthly sales tax drops.
