COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Potsticker, a calm three-year-old Hound mix at Tri-Cities Animal Services, has been waiting for a home since September 11, and he is neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped with a $50 adoption fee; adopters can visit him Tuesday through Saturday (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.).  KONA
  • Tri-Cities Food Co-op in Richland is celebrating its one-year anniversary this month with events showcasing local produce and baked goods — the co-op, guided by hundreds of members, will expand its product selection and community engagement in its second year.  Apple Valley News Now
  • A local nonprofit, Sent to Serve, has operated mobile shower services for two years to help people experiencing homelessness by serving 50 to 100 people at each event. It partners with local churches to offer showers, meals, haircuts and hygiene supplies and will hold its next event at First Lutheran Church in Kennewick from noon to 4 p.m.  Apple Valley News Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • An Evening in the Shire is a yearly event hosted by Art without Borders in a backyard (decorated as Hobbiton) that offers live music, actors in full costume, dinner, and games for all ages. The sold-out family event provides options for royal and common folk tickets and will return next year.  KEPR TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • WSU Tri-Cities saw an 8.1% rise in its enrollment as student numbers increased from 1489 to 1609, marking the largest freshman class and the first boost in graduate numbers in years—computer science and engineering programs led the growth while new majors in cybersecurity and social work were added.  KEPR TV
  • The Kennewick School District is hosting a safety summit at the Kamiakin High School Library on October 7 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. to discuss ways schools and the community can work together—following a recent online threat that led to a juvenile arrest.  Apple Valley News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Port of Pasco is changing its election system from at-large to by-district to boost local representation and give community voices more influence—the first election under the new system will take place next year.  NBC Tri-Cities

HEALTH NEWS

  • Kadlec Regional Medical Center raised its pink flag today to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month and to stress the importance of genetic testing for BRCA mutations—women with these changes face a much higher risk than the 13% in the general population. Survivor Jenna Boogerd shared her long path to diagnosis and doctors advise those with family histories to get genetic counseling.  Apple Valley News Now

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Kennewick Lions beat Richland 21-7 on Thursday night, extending their win streak to seven games. Quarterback Dominic Driver ran for two touchdowns, keeping the Lions undefeated at 5-0 while handing Richland its first loss at 4-1.  Apple Valley News Now
