  • City officials announced the new 3.25-acre dog park in Columbia Park will open at 10 a.m. on October 18—irrigation issues had delayed its planned opening. The park will have areas for small, medium and large dogs and will host a dog-friendly grand opening party with local vendors, giveaways, 100 free pup cups from ABeverageCompany and a Halloween costume contest.  Apple Valley News Now

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Calico Brands recalled about 175,000 Scripto Premium Torches due to failure to meet federal safety standards and the risk of fires or burns; the recalled items were sold at Walmart and Home Depot — from November 2024 to August 2025 at about $15 — with no injuries reported. Consumers are advised to return the torches for a full refund.  FOX 41 Yakima

  • The playground at Columbia Playfield is closed today after vandals damaged equipment—Richland Parks and Recreation confirmed the vandalism.  NBC Tri-Cities

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Spiders are emerging in local backyards for mating season as male giant house spiders leave their usual crawl spaces to search for mates—experts say only about 5% move between indoors and outdoors and none are dangerous to people.  KONA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Michael Heffner will begin as chief of the Kennewick Fire Department on Oct. 16 after a nationwide search—he served as deputy and interim chief earlier this year—and city manager Erin Erdman said he is ready to lead the department.  NBC Tri-Cities
  • Washington voters will soon receive ballots for the Nov. 4 election and will vote on Senate Joint Resolution 8201, a proposed constitutional amendment to let the state invest WA Cares Fund dollars in stocks and other equities instead of only safe fixed-income investments—supporters say the change could boost returns to better fund long-term care services. This measure is set to alter how a mandatory program, funded by payroll taxes, grows its assets.  NewsTalk 870
